What is DeepL?
DeepL is an AI-powered translation service operated by DeepL, a German-based company with the same name as the service. We are developing an artificial intelligence system for languages in Cologne, Germany, with deep learning as its axis.
10 billion search results for 1 billion users
If you count from DeepL’s advance, Linguee, a service that has surpassed one billion users and presented more than 10 billion search results, you can see that it has been analyzing large amounts of text data.
DeepL is available for free!
DeepL is free to use. It’s intuitive, so you don’t need to explain much, but you can type in the text you want to translate by copying and pasting, etc. You can also upload word (doc) and powerpoint files (ppt).
About the paid version
The free version has a limit on the number of characters, but the paid version does not have a limit on the number of characters. It is available from 8.99 euros per month (about 1,000 yen). The top-end Ultimate plan costs €59.99 (approx. 7,000). You can take advantage of discounts of up to nearly 35% if you sign up for an annual contract.
Features of DeepL
Let’s take a brief look at the features of DeepL. This page is mainly focused on the free version.
High quality translation
DeepL’s built-in neural network can reflect the fine nuances of the text and provide high quality translations that cannot be found in other translation services. DeepL has proven its high quality with some of the best results ever in scientific benchmarks testing.
Two-click translation using shortcut keys!
When you install the desktop application, you only need to click the shortcut key “Command+C” twice to complete the translation. There is no need to copy and paste to another browser or a separate tab, which is one of the difficulties of translation services.
How to use shortcut keys
To use the shortcut keys, you need to download the desktop application from your PC by clicking the download button at the top right of the page. I continue the explanation as an example of Mac OS, and put it in the application when the download of Installer is completed. For Macs, accessibility needs to be enabled, so go to the settings page and check “DeepL Helper” to complete the change.
The download is now complete.
The rest is easy! Simply select the text you want to translate and click ‘Command+C’ twice to have it translated automatically.
Let’s use it specifically. Select any character and press “Command+C” once, and a pop-up will appear at the bottom right of the screen.
Click “Command+C” again to instantly switch to the translation screen. Press “Insert” to insert it into the selected character area. It’s so fast! Just press “Copy” and the translation will be copied!
This sense of speed is an addictive and exhilarating feeling. I think it’s a great UX.
Finally.
This is the end of the article on DeepL’s introduction. Aside from the high quality of the translation, the user experience of completing the translation in two clicks is excellent. You can use it for free, so please try it out.
